Georgia GAP Insurance Cost 2026: Dealer vs Credit Union vs Auto Insurance Carrier

Dealer-sold GAP insurance in Georgia typically costs $400 to $900. The same coverage at your credit union or auto insurance carrier typically costs $200 to $400. That’s not a small difference. Here is what GAP actually is, what it costs across channels, and how to cancel dealer GAP within the 30-day free-look for a full refund.

TL;DR

  • GAP covers the difference between what you owe on your auto loan and what your insurance pays if the vehicle is totaled or stolen.
  • Dealer GAP in Georgia: $400 to $900 (typical range)
  • Credit union GAP: $200 to $400 (typical)
  • Auto insurance carrier GAP add-on: $20 to $40 per year (varies)
  • 30-day free-look window on most Georgia-sold GAP — full refund with no penalty if you cancel within the window.
  • Pro-rata refund if you cancel after the free-look but before the loan is paid off.

What GAP actually covers

GAP (Guaranteed Asset Protection) pays the “gap” between your auto insurance settlement (typically the vehicle’s actual cash value at the time of a total loss) and your outstanding loan balance. Example: you owe $28,000. The vehicle is totaled. Your insurance pays $22,000 actual cash value. GAP covers the $6,000 shortfall, so the loan is closed rather than leaving you responsible.

Why dealer GAP costs more

In Georgia, dealer GAP is typically financed into your auto loan as an add-on — meaning you pay interest on the GAP cost for the life of the loan. On a $700 GAP at 7% APR over 72 months, the true cost is approximately $860 ($160 in interest).

Credit union GAP is typically paid up front or added to the loan at the credit union’s rate. Auto insurance carriers add GAP to your existing policy for a modest annual premium.

Cost comparison table (Georgia 2026 typical)

ChannelSticker costTrue cost financed 72 mo @ 7%Best when
Dealer F&I office$700$860You want it done in one transaction; you’ll cancel dealer GAP within free-look and replace with credit union or carrier
Credit union$300$369 (if financed) or $300 (paid up front)You have credit-union membership and want lowest total cost
Auto insurance carrier$25/year × 6 years = $150$150Your carrier offers GAP as a policy add-on; you’re comfortable managing coverage annually

The 30-day free-look — this is your escape hatch

Most GAP products sold in Georgia include a 30-day free-look window during which you may cancel for full refund. This is a contract term, not a Georgia statute — read your specific GAP addendum for the free-look terms.

The strategy: accept dealer GAP at signing (it satisfies any lender GAP requirement), then within the 30-day free-look window, cancel dealer GAP and buy GAP from your credit union or auto insurance carrier.

How to cancel dealer GAP

  1. Read the GAP addendum for the cancellation address (usually the GAP administrator, not the dealer).
  2. Send written cancellation notice within the 30-day free-look window to that address.
  3. Copy the dealer for their records.
  4. Keep proof of mailing.
  5. Refund is applied to your loan principal (if still financed) or paid to you (if loan paid off). Refund window is typically 60 days from proper notice.

Pro-rata refund on early payoff

If you pay off the auto loan before the GAP term ends, the pro-rata unearned portion of GAP is refundable. Ask for it — the refund does not always process automatically.

Applicable Georgia statutes

  • O.C.G.A. § 33-33 et seq. — Georgia Service Contract Act framework (GAP is typically structured as a debt cancellation contract)
  • O.C.G.A. § 10-1-393 — Georgia FBPA (backstop for deceptive GAP sales practices)
  • Georgia Office of Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner at oci.georgia.gov
