What the dealer isn’t telling you about the APR
The APR on your Buyers Order is usually not the “buy rate” — the rate the lender actually approved you for. The dealer can legally mark that rate up (called dealer participation or dealer reserve) as long as they disclose the final APR. Federal law (TILA) requires the APR disclosure but does not cap the markup.
How to protect yourself:
- Ask for the buy rate in writing. Not every dealer will provide it, but ask.
- Get a competing pre-approval from a credit union or bank BEFORE going to the dealership. Then let the dealer beat it.
- Read the TILA disclosure – Amount Financed, Finance Charge, APR, Total of Payments, Payment Schedule. Every one is required.
- Do the math yourself – this calculator does it for you against the median APR for your credit tier.

Loan disclosure & representative example
Real Talk Media Group is not a lender. Car Real Talk is an independent auto-buying advisory. This calculator is a free tool for shoppers to estimate monthly payments — it does not originate, broker, or arrange auto loans, and no application is submitted from this page.
Representative APR range (informational only): Auto loan APRs typically range from 4.99% to 24.99% depending on credit score, term length, vehicle age, down payment, and lender. Buyers with excellent credit (740+) usually see the lowest end. Buyers with subprime credit (below 620) may see the upper end or beyond.
Representative example: A $20,000 loan at 8.9% APR for 60 months would carry a monthly payment of approximately $414.20 and total finance charges of about $4,851.83 over the life of the loan. Actual figures depend on your credit, term, and lender terms.
Fees this tool does not include: title/registration fees, documentation fees, state sales tax or TAVT (Georgia), gap insurance, extended warranty premiums, or any add-ons the dealership may propose. Add those separately to your out-the-door price.
Not credit or financial advice. Rates change daily; get a written pre-approval from your bank or credit union before you shop, and compare that rate against any dealer-arranged financing offer. For questions on your specific deal, book a 9 Out-the-Door Audit and we will review your Buyers Order line by line.
