Georgia F&I Add-ons Ranked 2026: What to Buy, What to Skip, What to Cancel

The F&I office menu can add $3,000 to $8,000 to your Georgia auto deal. Some products make sense for some buyers. Most do not for most buyers. Here is the honest ranking of every common F&I add-on in Georgia — from GAP to VIN etch — with buyer types who benefit and buyer types who should walk.

TL;DR

  • Sometimes-buy: GAP (if 0-5% down), VSC / extended warranty (if complex vehicle, high miles planned)
  • Rarely-buy: Tire & Wheel, PDR, Key Replacement (only if specific use case)
  • Almost-never-buy: VIN etch, appearance packages, chemical rustproofing (junk-fee category under FTC UDAAP)
  • Every add-on has a 30-60 day free-look in Georgia. Cancel within window for full refund.
  • Every add-on the dealer sells, a credit union or direct provider sells for less.

1. GAP Insurance — Sometimes-buy

What it does: Pays the difference between what you owe on the auto loan and what your insurance pays if the vehicle is totaled.

Buy if: You put down 0-5% or rolled negative equity into the loan (you’ll be underwater for the first 12-18 months).

Skip if: You put down 15%+ or your loan is over $30,000 with a paid-down trade.

Georgia dealer price: $400-$900. Credit union price: $200-$400. See Georgia GAP cost comparison.

2. Vehicle Service Contract (VSC / “extended warranty”) — Sometimes-buy

What it does: Covers repair costs on specified vehicle systems after manufacturer warranty expires (or from purchase, depending on plan).

Buy if: Complex European luxury vehicle (BMW, Audi, Mercedes), EV with expensive drivetrain out of warranty coverage, high-mileage planned (100k+ over 4 years), or turbocharged engine.

Skip if: Simple, reliable vehicle (Toyota, Honda, Mazda) held for less than manufacturer warranty term.

Georgia dealer price: $1,500-$3,000. Credit union / direct provider price: $800-$2,000. See Georgia VSC cost comparison.

3. Tire & Wheel Protection — Rarely-buy

What it does: Covers tire and wheel damage from road hazards (potholes, curb damage, nails).

Buy if: Low-profile-tire performance vehicle (BMW M, Mercedes AMG, Corvette) in an urban environment with pothole problems.

Skip if: Standard family vehicle with standard tires.

Georgia dealer price: $600-$1,200 for full term. Alternative: Some auto insurance carriers include tire coverage on comprehensive policies.

4. Paintless Dent Repair (PDR) — Rarely-buy

What it does: Covers dent removal via paintless techniques.

Buy if: Vehicle parked outdoors in high-hail area, or high-value vehicle whose resale depends on cosmetic condition.

Skip if: Vehicle garaged or in low-hail area.

Georgia dealer price: $400-$800 for full term. Independent PDR shops typically charge $75-$150 per dent — direct pay is often cheaper than the coverage over term.

5. Key Replacement — Rarely-buy

What it does: Covers replacement of lost, stolen, or damaged keys and fobs, up to a cap.

Buy if: Vehicle with expensive smart-key technology ($400+ replacement cost) and you have a history of losing keys.

Skip if: Vehicle with standard key or you rarely lose things.

Georgia dealer price: $300-$500 for full term. Direct dealer key programming without coverage: $150-$400 typically.

6. Credit Life / Credit Disability — Rarely-buy

What it does: Pays off the auto loan on the borrower’s death (Credit Life) or covers loan payments during disability (Credit Disability).

Buy if: No other life insurance and you have dependents. Rare situation.

Skip if: You have adequate life and disability insurance already (most buyers).

Georgia dealer price: $500-$1,500 for full term. Alternative: term life insurance is dramatically cheaper per dollar of coverage.

7. VIN Etching / Anti-theft Package — Almost-never-buy

What it does: Etches VIN onto windows (small deterrent to theft) or bundles cheap security features.

Buy if: Almost never.

Skip if: Almost always. This is the leading junk-fee category under FTC Section 5 enforcement (see F8 UDAAP).

Georgia dealer price: $200-$500. Actual dealer cost: $10-$25.

8. Appearance Package / Paint Sealant — Almost-never-buy

What it does: Chemical treatment applied to paint / interior for “protection.”

Buy if: Almost never. Modern automotive paint is highly durable; over-the-counter sealants work equivalently well at 1/10 the cost.

Skip if: Almost always.

9. Chemical Rustproofing / Undercoating — Almost-never-buy

What it does: Sprays undercoating for “rust prevention.”

Buy if: Almost never. Modern vehicles have galvanized steel bodies with factory-applied undercoating that lasts the vehicle’s life.

Skip if: Almost always.

The negotiation strategy

The F&I office will present these on a “menu” as a package. Ask for the menu unbundled with each item priced individually. Then decide item by item.

Every item you accept can be cancelled within the 30-60 day free-look window for full refund. Every item you cancel can be replaced with a credit-union or direct-consumer alternative at typically half the price.

Applicable statutes

  • O.C.G.A. § 33-33-1 et seq. — Georgia Service Contract Act
  • O.C.G.A. § 33-31-1 et seq. — Georgia insurance code (credit life/disability)
  • 15 U.S.C. § 45 — FTC Act § 5 (junk-fee framework)
  • O.C.G.A. § 10-1-393 — Georgia FBPA (deceptive add-on selling)
